The Karate Kid is the story of a misplaced New Jersey kid, Daniel Larusso, who has relocated with his single mother to Los Angeles. Larusso, portrayed by Ralph Macchio, plays an underdog who is bullied nearly into submission by a group of high school toughs but is saved by a wise old handyman who uses creative ways to teach the youngster self defense. The classic feel good drama is a must for any fan of 80's cinema to include on their Netflix playlist.
Daniel Larusso knew it would be tough to move all of the way across the country but he didn't have any idea about what was in store for him when he and his mother settled down to start a new life on the west coast. Daniel's efforts to make new friends find him at a before school beach bonfire party where he seems to assimilate fairly well with some new friends and even catches the eye of a well to do high school junior named Ali Mills. As the party winds down Daniel makes his move to get to know Ali better when a group of motor biking high school bullies arrive on the scene. The group is known as the Cobra Kai and they are led by Johnny who just so happens to be a karate champion and also Ali's jealous ex-boyfriend and they are there to start trouble. Daniel's noble attempt to defend Ally finds him at the wrong end of a beat down leaving him bloody and bruised on the beach. Things don't improve when Daniel starts school, he is constantly hassled and abused by the Cobra Kai as he continues to try to woo Ali. Things come to an end at a Halloween party when Daniel is chased and nearly hospitalized during an attack by the Cobra Kai when he is saved by a mysterious stranger.
The stranger is Mr.Miyagi, who Daniel knows as the handyman at his apartment complex. He agrees to teach Daniel the method and techniques of self defense that he learned in his native Japan. Using a unique training method that used regular household chores to teach defensive techniques Mr. Miyagi instills confidence in Daniel and even confronts the Cobra Kai's evil teacher, Kreese. Mr. Miyagi challenges Kreese and his trainees, offering to have Daniel participate in the upcoming state karate championship. Miyagi grows close to Daniel as he teaches him to fight with honor and that Karate is about using your heard as well as your hands. Daniel is able to finally win the heart of Ali, the girl of his dreams. With the help of Mr. Miyagi and Ali, Daniel is able to face his fears and stand up to his bullies as he attempts to prove that justice can be served in an honorable and traditional way. Daniel is forced to go through all of the Cobra Kai in the tournament for a chance to face off against Johnny in a dramatic finale.

The hit movie from 1984 is a hit on Netflix for home viewers. It even spawned several sequels that continued to tell the story of Daniel and Mr. Miyagi's unique friendship. The Columbia Pictures produced film was very well received by critics and was nominated for several wards. Pat Morita was nominated for an Academy Award in acting for his role as Mr. Miyagi. The cast also included a young Elisabeth Shue, Randee Heller, Martin Kove, and William Zabka in his most iconic role as Johnny. The film's soundtrack was a tremendous hit with songs from 80's music makers such as Bannanarama, Survivor, and the song used in the movie's famous karate tournament, Joe Esposito's 'Your the Best Around.'
