The football World Cup was first played in 1930. The tournament which started off with only 13 teams 88 years back, is now the most watched sporting spectacle in the world.
As many 108 countries participated in the qualifiers for the the 2018 FIFA World Cup and 32 qualified for the finals.
Football powerhouses Italy and Netherlands failed to qualify while Argentina just about to managed to make the cut.
The World Cup that started in 1930 was held for another 2 times before being halted till 1950. It was in 1950 that the tournament was held again. The gap in between came due to the World War II but in an attempt to get the countries together despite the catastrophe and keep the spirit of sports alive, the World Cup took shape once again.
While this year, there are 32 teams participating in the World Cup in Russia, FIFA's meeting have had an agenda of increasing the participating teams to 48.
The next World Cup will be held in 2022 in Qatar.
